National Flood Insurance Program

From Equinox Wiki

This page is a rough draft and will need more work before it's finalized.

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a government-backed insurance program that helps property owners, renters, and businesses recover from flood damage by offering flood insurance policies.

The NFIP's Write Your Own Program (WYO) began in 1983 as a cooperative undertaking between the private insurance industry and FEMA, and allows participating property and casualty insurance companies to write and service the SFIP in their own names.

WYO companies use the same policy terms as the NFIP, but write the coverage on their own paper. The NFIP reinsures 100% of the coverage.

WYO companies must follow the rules and regulations of the NFIP, including floodplain management regulations. There is no deviation of the rules, rates and regulations for different WYO Companies, or for the NFIP Direct.

FloodSmart

FloodSmart is the official platform of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), designed to educate the public about flood risks and provide tools and resources for insurance agents. The site is divided into two primary sections:

Public-Facing Resources

The main site helps homeowners, renters, and business owners understand their flood risk, locate insurance providers, and access tools like the Flood Risk Tool. It focuses on promoting awareness of the benefits of flood insurance and steps to take before and after flooding events.

Agent Portal

Agents gain access to a subdomain specifically tailored to their needs. This section provides:

  • Marketing Tools: Brochures, videos, and customizable content to help agents promote flood insurance effectively.
  • Sales Aids: Quick guides, policy information, and key talking points for client interactions.
  • Training Resources: Online courses, webinars, and job aids to stay informed about NFIP rules, policy changes, and best practices.

FloodSmart.gov is an essential tool for agents, offering practical support to improve outreach, answer client questions, and navigate the complexities of NFIP policies.
